Among the fruits whose name begins with the letter ‘g’ it is customary to mention some of the most popular ones such as currant, guava and pomegranate; but others of great nutritional and medicinal value are forgotten or unknown.

This name, in America, refers to a certain variety of cherry, which is also called semeruca or semeruco, acerola, cherry and manzanita; native to Central America, the Antilles, and the humid tropics of South America.

Among the qualities of the so-called Antillean cherry, it is a fruit that contains a quantity of vitamin C much higher than that of any other fruit that nature can offer.

Along with vitamin C, it is possible to find antioxidant components in this wonderful fruit, including phenols, tannins and carotenoids; all in great proportion, for the benefit of the health of those who consume them.

The use of the cherry (acerola) in the kitchen includes jams, jellies, sweets, juices, juices, spirits, liqueurs. This fruit can be eaten fresh, making sure it is ripe; since green is quite acidic.

Not only does the fruit provide benefits; the leaves of the Annona muricata They are used for medicinal purposes, for which they are prepared in the form of an infusion in the domestic treatment of many ills.

  • The decoction of the fruit, with its emollient and astringent properties, can be used against hemorrhoids, as an antidiarrheal, as a diuretic, to cure colds and flu, and to treat kidney ailments.
  • The mucilage is used in the treatment of burns and the beautification of the hair, in addition to preventing hair loss.
  • To treat diseases such as gonorrhea, syphilis, malaria and measles, the infusion of the bark of the tree has been used; the cooking of the leaves against diseases of the liver and kidneys, asthma, bronchitis, gonorrhea and fever.


We can call it guama, guaba, paterna, inga or pepeto; the qualities of this plant, native to Venezuela, Colombia, Central America and Peru, will remain the same.

The fruit of the guama, which bears the same names, consists of a thick pod that encloses the seeds covered with a soft pulp, with a very sweet flavor, this being the edible part.

The guama can be eaten in its natural state, once extracted from the pod. However, for some indigenous people it is a source for the preparation of pleasant alcoholic beverages.

While the fruit serves as food, some indigenous communities give the seeds and leaves of the guama medicinal use, using them in cases of diarrhea and rheumatism, in order to alleviate these ailments.
